Baías e Enseadas wines are now Made in Sintra certified
Daniel Afonso's wine project is a dream come true
The 'Baías e Enseadas' wine comes from a modest plot of 1.5 hectares of vineyards. Daniel Afonso is the project's mentor, distinguishing himself on the wine scene not for his scale, but for the exceptional quality and authenticity of the wines he produces. The venture began to take shape in 2012, marking the beginning of the realization of a dream rooted in the wine-growing traditions of the Colares region.
Daniel Afonso's dream began with the planting of the Ribeirinha vineyard in Codiceira, followed by the Campo vineyard in Gouveia. Demonstrating a firm commitment to excellence and the preservation of regional identity, the following year he introduced three white grape varieties emblematic of the Lisbon region - Fernão Pires, Arinto and Malvasia de Colares, the latter of which he referred to as the supreme national white grape variety. These were planted 5km from the Atlantic. In 2014, his passion led him to expand the vineyard by a further 0.5 hectares, enriching the vineyard with the Castelão variety.
Vinhos Baías e Enseadas is already a certified product
Baías e Enseadas currently has four vineyards, from which approximately 8,000 bottles are produced each year. Of these, 90% go to international markets, winning over connoisseurs in the United States, England, Norway and Belgium, while the remaining 10% are sold on the national market, particularly in the Algarve, by renowned restaurants such as 'Vila Joya', A Ver Tavira', 'Al Sud' and 'Bon-Bon'.
International recognition soon followed, and in New York, 'Baías e Enseadas' is already in 70% of Michelin-starred restaurants. Notably, at the exalted 'Per Se', which boasts three Michelin stars, 'Baías e Enseadas Malvasia' is among the four exclusive Portuguese white wines selected.
Daniel Afonso intends to produce other varieties of wine, such as Rosé, a sparkling wine and the prestigious Ramisco de Colares, thus perpetuating the rich viticultural heritage of the municipality of Sintra. This venture is not only a celebration of winemaking, but also a tribute to excellence Made in Sintra, highlighting the region's indelible mark on the world of wine.
